Background and Objective: Students are about to get married, so they should make this decision with due care and attention. The aim of this study was to determine the criteria for choosing a marriage partner and their relationship with religious values among students of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences, Yazd.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 180 students of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences, Yazd. Random sampling was conducted in 2022 using a multistage stratified method. Demographic questionnaires, Mate Selection Criteria Inventory (MSCI), and Glock and Stark religiosity scale were completed. The data were analyzed using SPSS 26.
Findings: Among the criteria for choosing a spouse, students gave the highest score to the cultural dimension (69.83±10.28) and the lowest score to the economic dimension (16.29±2.89). In terms of religious values, they also gave the highest score to the faith dimension (16.61±6.17) and the lowest to the rituals dimension (9.63±6.36). A statistically significant correlation was found between religious values and the criteria for choosing a spouse (p=0.03, r=0.32).
Conclusion: Students gave the highest score to the cultural dimension and the lowest score to the economic dimension. The results of this study can be used to maintain and improve students' health and refer them to premarital counseling. There is a need for university planners to provide a platform for students to familiarize and educate themselves with the right criteria for choosing a spouse, especially in the moral and religious dimensions.
