Background and Objective: Marital satisfaction plays a crucial role in the longevity of a marriage, which requires the ability to express positive emotions. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence and marital satisfaction among nurses.
Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted on nurses in hospitals in Ramsar and Tonekabon using the Bar-On Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire and the Enrich Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire in 2023. The data were analyzed using SPSS19 and descriptive and analytical statistical methods (Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson and stepwise regression).
Findings: The results revealed that sex was found to have a significant relationship only with stress management (p<0.034). There was a significant relationship between age with adaptability and intrapersonal aspects (p<0.024 and p<0.000)، age with general emotional intelligence (p<0.000), stress management (p<0.000), adaptability (p<0.000), interpersonal aspect (p<0.006), intrapersonal aspect (p<0.000), and marital satisfaction (p<0.000), the spouse’s age related to adaptability and intrapersonal aspect (p<0.02 and p<0.008)،employment status (hired, contractual, and contract recruiters), general emotional intelligence (p<0.003), stress management (p<0.001), adaptability (p<0.001), intrapersonal aspect (p<0.000), and marital satisfaction (p<0.005). Furthermore, only the stress control and extrapersonal domains had predictive ability for marital satisfaction. There was a positive and significant correlation (r=0.128) between emotional intelligence and marital satisfaction of nurses.
Conclusion: Given the significant positive relationship found between emotional intelligence and marital satisfaction among nurses, it is evident that emotional intelligence can play a crucial role in enhancing marital relationships. Therefore, counselors should take effective action in this area by teaching how to increase emotional intelligence in improving interpersonal and marital relationships.
