Abstract:   (3808 Views)
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Anxiety is a helpless and mental uncomfortable feeling relating to the threatening situation. Surgery is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure, which increases the psychological and physiological reactions such as anxiety in patients. Preoperative waiting time is experienced in two ways: informed of the need for surgery until hospitalizations and being on the operation list and from admission to transfer to the operating room. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between preoperative waiting period and anxiety.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study with a sample size of 80 individuals and non-random purposive sampling method was performed in Poursina Hospital. The hospital anxiety and depression questionnaire was used. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, Spearman and t-test.
FINDINGS: According to the results of descriptive statistics, mean waiting time and mean anxiety score were 92/06 ± 54/59 hours and 12/45 ± 3/59, respectively. The results of the analysis showed that there was a statistically significant relationship between waiting time before orthopedic surgery and anxiety (P Value = 0.056).
CONCLUSION: The results indicated the anxiety of most patients before surgery and significant correlation with the duration of preoperative anxiety in patients. It is suggested that further research should be conducted on other factors associated with anxiety before surgery and planning to reduce the preoperative waiting time.
