Background and Objective: Prostatectomy is one of the treatment options for benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer and may result in changes in body image. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the association between self-esteem and body image attitudes among older Iranian adults undergoing prostatectomy.
Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study was conducted in 2023 among 191 eligible older adults who were selected from hospitals affiliated with Tehran University of Medical Sciences using simple random sampling. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and a body image attitudes questionnaire. The questionnaires were administered by telephone. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics with SPSS 16. A value of P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Findings: The mean age of the older adults undergoing prostatectomy was 68.44 ± 6.64 years. The mean total scores for body image attitudes and self-esteem were both at a satisfactory level. According to Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis, self-esteem was significantly and positively correlated with body image attitudes (r=0.534, P=0.001).
Conclusion: A significant positive association was found between self-esteem and body image among older adults undergoing prostatectomy. Higher self-esteem was associated with more favorable attitudes toward body image in these individuals.
