Determine the level of anxiety and depression in wives of husbands with addiction

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Depression and anxiety are the most prevalent mental disorders. Depression is a sick feeling of sadness and grief accompanied with some degrees of inactive reactions. Anxiety is a vague feeling of fear and anxious that affects the individuals' performance. In addition to the mental disorder, addiction which is a big problem in today's society causes many underlying mental disorders such as anxiety and depression It is obvious that the addiction strictly influences on the present and future life of the addicts and on those who have close contact with them. The aim of this study was to determine the level of anxiety and depression in wives of husbands with addiction.

Methods:

This descriptive study was conducted on 46 wives of husbands with addiction via sampling. Collection tools consisted of 3 questionnaires including demographic questionnaire, Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16.

FINDINGS: The results showed that on the one hand, 34.8%, 39.2% and 26% wives of husbands with addiction had low, moderate and high anxiety, respectively. On the other hand, 39.1%, 28.3% and 23.9% women with addicted husbands had low, moderate and high depression, respectively. There was a significant relationship between anxiety and depression of wives and their husbands with addiction, their economic status and the time of drug consuming (p<0/05).

CONCLUSION Mental health is one of the important aspect of public health and anxiety and depression as mental health factors not only create problems but also interfere with their professional roles and responsibilities. A society that think about individuals' health and future must investigate and eliminate the factors which cause the psychological problems. One of these factors is addiction, so the authorities should take the essential steps to achieve this goal.
