Background and Objective: Healthy aging is a fundamental right of all human beings, which highlights the importance of the aging phenomenon and the prevention of its related problems. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the self-care status of elderly individuals aged over 75 years living in Dhi Qar city.
Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional, and quantitative study was conducted on all elderly people aged above 75 years residing in Dhi Qar, referred to health centers. Sampling was carried out using the convenience sampling method, and elderly individuals who were willing to participate were included in the study. Data were collected using an elderly self-care questionnaire and analyzed with SPSS.
Findings: A total of 190 elderly participants were included in the study, consisting of 78 (41.4%) men and 112 (58.9%) women. The majority (69.5%) were in the age group of 75–85 years. Moreover, 81.6% of the participants were married, and 43.2% had primary education. The level of self-care was poor in 1.1%, moderate in 60.2%, and good in 38.4% of the elderly. The highest level of self-care was observed in the spiritual dimension at good level in 62.1%, the social care dimension at moderate level in 74.2%, the physical care dimension moderate in 60.5%, and care during illness at moderate level in 74.2% of the elderly.
Conclusion: The findings indicated that the overall level of self-care among the elderly was moderate, while the spiritual dimension showed a good level. Based on these results, it is essential to provide necessary training to the elderly in order to take care of themselves.
